Whats CSI

In wireless communications, channel state information (CSI) is the known channel properties of a communication link. This information describes how a signal propagates from the transmitter to the receiver and represents the combined effect of, for example, scattering, fading, and power decay with distance.

 

Whats the function of CSI

 

Laptop connectivity to connecting mobile and smart devices to the Internet and home networks.

 

Such an evolution has resulted in the prevalence of WiFi devices, which provides opportunities to extend WiFi's capabilities beyond communication, particularly in human sensing.

 

As the wireless signals travel through space, they interact with human body and undergo wave phenomena such as reflection and diffraction. These phenomenon led to multipath effects, which carry a rich set of information about the physical environment including the human location and activities. Indeed, there has been a growing interest in using multipath effects to perform many researches, such as: Human sensing, ranging from large scale movements to small scale motions and location. Human behavior recognition is also one of the research hotspots in various fields, such as smart homes, building surveillance, and medical health. Even in some researches the WiFi sensing capabilities has been extended from human sensing to sensing bio-information of fruits (Ripening of fruits).

 

To overcome the limitations of traditional technologies, the received signal strength (RSS) of wireless communication from the medium access control (MAC) layer is ubiquitously utilized for

human motion detection.

 

There is an alteration for the RSS when the interest environment changes. Furthermore, it is adept at obtaining and lightening the burden of objects. Thus, researchers leverage existing wireless devices to capture the RSS from received packets and process it for human motion detection.

 

Despite major advances, prior RSS based techniques are limiting with the following serious drawback: The RSS is highly variable to environmental changes, which can result in mistaken

detection.

 

Driven by the necessity of precise human behavior recognition systems, researchers have realized that a reliable metric is needed.

 

Fortunately, channel state information (CSI) is obtained on commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) devices through modified hardware by researchers to identify human behavior.

 

Compared to the RSS, CSI has the following advantages: First, CSI maintains temporal stability in static environments and exhibits variance in a changing scenario; second, different from the RSS with spontaneous high susceptibility, CSI is independent of transmission power changes.

 

Therefore, CSI has been touted as promising information for human behavior recognition, motion, detection, sensing fruit ripening etc.

 

The main objective of this feature is to collect channel state information based on the user configured mode. The algorithm to use the CSI and get the information on human behavior/motion detection is part of the user space tool. So, the driver will relay CSI data to user space for further processing.
